Can a Western Team Win the 2020 LoL World Championship?

The 2020 LoL World Championship is right around the corner, and fans from all around the world are eager to see their favorite teams face each other in memorable matches. The “Worlds” championship has always been one of the biggest eSports events of the year, so, logically, many people are waiting impatiently for it.

 

With a few days left, fans are already placing their bets on which team is going to win the championship. While there are definitely fan-favorites for this edition, there seems to be a heavy competition this year. Some of the teams acclaimed by fans are the Western teams, which have made impressive matches and plays over the year, so they are expected to give that same match quality in Worlds.

How Are Western Teams Looking for the 2020 LoL World Championship?

 

Aside from Fnatic’s victory at the first-ever LoL World Championship, Western teams have had a tough time against Korean and Chinese teams, such as FunPlus Phoenix (2019), Invictus Gaming (2018), Samsung Galaxy (2017), and SK Telecom T1 (2013, 2015, and 2016). However, this doesn’t mean that Western teams don’t have a chance at this edition of Worlds.

 

 On the contrary, teams such as Fnatic and G2 Esports have come extremely close to winning the championship. In 2019, G2 Esports got second place against FunPlus Phoenix, with a losing score of 3-0. On the other hand, Fnatic got second place against Invictus Gaming in 2018, with a losing score of 3-0.

 

Regardless of the previous years’ scores, these two Western teams have been showing outstanding performances at the LEC 2020. G2 Esports achieved a fantastic score 15-3, giving them the first place on the LEC 2020 Spring. On the other hand, Fnatic got second place with an overall score of 13-5.

 

Aside from these teams, MAD Lions and Rogue also proved themselves in the LEC 2020 Spring Season, giving them a place in this edition of Worlds. While most fans are rooting for Fnatic or G2 Esports, other Western teams such as Team Liquid or FlyQuest may surprise us at the event.
